SMISHING ALERT
An alert from the BBB Serving Eastern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula warns cell phone users about the most recent “smishing” scam. Smishing is a relatively new twist on an old scam that capitalizes on the explosive growth in smartphones. A smishing scam is a phishing scam that is sent to you via SMS text to your phone, instead of via email to your computer. Smishing scams utilize well known retailers' names and popularity, such as Walmart and Best Buy, to encourage the “winner” to click on the impostor’s website to claim their prize.
If you click on the link in the text message to sign-up for the free gift card, you will be asked for personal information that could be used to steal your identity.

The BBB Wise Giving Alliance initiates charity reviews based on donor requests. Unlike other charity review organizations, it does not rely solely on public documents but requires charities to provide more in-depth information in order to evaluate its governance, effectiveness, finances, fund raising, donor privacy and other matters.
