Our complex marketplace demands educated, savvy consumers. That’s why the Better Business Bureau sponsors LifeSmarts. We want to equip our future’s leaders with enough consumer knowledge to avoid learning from life's “school of hard knocks.”
LifeSmarts helps students address important issues -- car buying, credit card management, and safety, to name a few. A community effort, LifeSmarts brings students, teachers and local leaders together to help teens learn about issues they may not normally study in the classroom. LifeSmarts participants have fun while developing teamwork and communications skills, self- esteem, and leadership abilities.
LifeSmarts teaches students to avoid fraud and scams and to make smart choices. The program also teaches participants how to obtain informational brochures and other resources made available by government agencies, businesses, consumer groups, and trade associations.
LifeSmarts is a competition. The content and competition questions focus on five key areas of consumer knowledge: personal finance; health and safety; environment; technology, and; consumer rights and responsibilities.
Students participate in teams. Each team is comprised of five students and one adult mentor. Most of our teams come from schools, but teen organizations such as clubs, church groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4-H, and FFA are also welcome.
Students compete online and off-line. For the online competition, students enter into a series of multiple-choice questions. Questions get increasingly challenging as the students progress. During the in-person state competition, students compete by answering first-to-the-buzzer multiple-choice questions.
LifeSmarts is open to all students in grades 9 - 12. Teams can register and compete online at www.lifesmarts.org. The top teams will advance to the state tournament which will be held in Rochester MI, March 2014. The state champions will represent Michigan at the national LifeSmarts competition, which is held in a different U.S. city each year. The 2014 LifeSmarts National Tournament will be held April 2014 in Orlando, FL.
Michigan LifeSmarts is sponsored by the Better Business Bureau Serving Eastern Michigan. The National Consumers League is the creator and national program sponsor.
